Former President Buhari Passes Away in London
The former president passed away on Sunday, July 13, at approximately 4:30 pm in London after a long illness.
Garba Shehu, former special adviser to President Buhari, announced his passing in a brief statement on Sunday evening.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London,” he said.
The former president's illness was not publicly disclosed. He had been receiving treatment in London for a few days before passing away on Sunday.
Buhari was Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023. He also served as the military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
Muhammadu Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, in Katsina State, where he was raised by his mother after his father's death at age four. He was married twice, first to Safinatu Yusuf (1971-1988) and then to Aisha Halilu (married in 1989). He is survived by 10 children.
