Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, says he built his wealth from scratch, without inheriting any money from his father.
In a resurfaced 2020 Bloomberg interview, Aliko Dangote shared that his great-grandfather was West Africa's richest man in the 1940s and his grandfather was also among Nigeria's wealthiest.
“The family name is Dantata. That’s from my maternal side,” Dangote said.
Dangote said his father was wealthy due to business and politics, but he intentionally didn't inherit or keep any of the family wealth.

“One thing that I’m very, very proud of is that I did not inherit any money from my father. I built everything from scratch to where I am.
“Whatever I inherited from him, which means in assets, I gave that on to charity since then,” he explained.
Dangote started his career working with his uncle, then moved to Lagos and began trading cement.
