Nigerian Military Officers Detained Over Plot to Overthrow President Tinubu

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Nigerian Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) detained a Brigadier-General and several other senior military officers over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. The detained officers, numbering around 16, are within the rank of Captain to Brigadier-General and are being held in Abuja and other undisclosed locations.

The story, first broken by Sahara Reporters, has sparked widespread discussion on social media and among security analysts, though official statements from the military have downplayed the severity of the arrests.

According to sources, the officers were planning to stage a coup and take over government from "selfish politicians," with their grievances stemming from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues. The coup attempt was thwarted after intelligence gathering by the DIA and sister agencies, and the October 1 Independence Day parade was cancelled due to the coup plot.

The Defence Headquarters has issued a statement describing the detentions as "an internal disciplinary process," but sources reveal that the officers were actually arrested over a coup plot. The Presidency is expected to address the nation once investigations are concluded.
