EFCC Detains Former AGF Malami Over Terrorism Financing Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Abubakar Malami, Nigeria's former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, in connection with allegations of terrorism financing, among other financial misconducts.

Abubakar Malami was detained by EFCC on Dec 9, 2025, over allegations including terrorism financing. He was invited for questioning on Nov 29, honored the summons, but was detained after failing to meet bail conditions.

Malami has vehemently denied all claims, calling them "politically motivated" and "fabricated" in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

He emphasized his role in strengthening Nigeria's anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CFT) frameworks, including the 2022 Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act and efforts to exit the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List. He stated he has never been formally accused or investigated by any agency, domestic or international, for terrorism-related activities and warned against linking his professional dealings to unsubstantiated terror claims.
