Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems recently opened up about a past toxic relationship in an interview with Angie Martinez.
In the conversation, she described how she once experienced what she thought was love, but it turned out to be more about control and ownership.
According to Tems, the person was obsessed and possessive, making her feel like she was owned rather than loved. Tems emphasized that true love isn’t about possession or obsession, but, about mutual respect and partnership.

She noted that everyone has likely encountered this kind of “toxic love” from someone who doesn’t even realize their behavior is harmful, stressing that toxic relationships can be draining, especially when the person exhibiting toxic behavior isn't aware of it. Tems encouraged people to recognize unhealthy patterns in their relationships and prioritize emotional well-being.
