Poor Nigerians to benefit from $321m Abacha loot

The federal government of Nigeria will start spending the money looted by Sani Abacha next month, the sum of $321m which was recovered from Switzerland. The money is part of the money looted by Abacha.

The money will be used for Social Investment Programme of the government.

Mrs Maryam Uwais who is the special advsiser to the president on social investment , made this known in Abuja on Thursday at a forum of asset recovery organized by the Swiss embassy in Collaboration with African Network for Environment and Economic Justice.

Mrs Linda Ekeato, Manager Legal, Social Investment  office, who represented Mrs Maryam Uwais explained that one of the conditions of returning Abacha loot was that the spending will be monitored by the World Bank.

She said an agreement was signed by both the Federal Government and World Bank to use the money to fund Social investment Programme, which among other things, give money to the poorest and most vulnerable households.
