"Nigeria Is Not Yet Right For Self-defence" - Reno Omokri Opposes Ned Nwoko's Proposed Bill Allowing Nigerians To Carry Firearms

 

Human rights activist, Reno Omokri has stated that Nigeria is not yet mature to individually control firearms. 

The social media influencer has asserted that it will be dangerous for individuals to own and carry firearms, and that will cause more problems than it will solve.

Citing example of what happened at Okuama, Delta state on March 14, 2024, 

the killing of 17 soldiers of the Nigerian Army, Omokri has disagreed with Ned Nwoko's call that citizens should be allowed to own and carry firearms.

Senator Ned Nwoko had called for the introduction of a bill that allows civilians to own and carry firearms amidst rising kidnapping threats.

The lawmaker representing Delta North senatorial district advocated for legislation permitting civilians to own and carry firearms to protect themselves when the need arise.

“I am pleased that the topic has gained national significance, sparking diverse opinions and discussions that predominantly fall into two camps – one in opposition and the other in support.”

Senator Nwoko added, “It’s evident that the existing security measures have not been sufficient in safeguarding our communities.

“Allowing law-abiding citizens to possess firearms could potentially provide a sense of security and a means to protect themselves and their families from immediate threats.”

According to Omokri, any religious disputes, there will be  bloodbaths if individuals are allowed to own firearms.

“I will have to disagree with Senator Ned Nwoko. Nigeria is not yet right for self-defence. Maybe at some point in the future. But not now. Granting citizens the right to bear arms will cause more challenges than it will solve. Look at what happened at Okuama. We have not even passed such a law, and civilians are already killing soldiers and police officers in Delta and other states. What will now happen to their fellow citizens when it becomes law? Obidients would have sent me to join my ancestors by now. People who can kill soldiers will not think twice before killing their neighbours. Tribal

And religious disputes will result in bloodbaths. Husbands and wives will settle DNA disputes with bullets. Debtors will solve their indebtedness by taking out their creditors. State Police makes better sense than arming Nigerian citizens. We are not yet mature enough to individually control firearms.
