I Was Almost Trapped in an Abusive Marriage - Ngozi Nwosu

Veteran Nollywood actress, Ngozi Nwosu has bravely shared her harrowing experience of physical abuse in her marriage. 

Despite her late husband's violent behavior, which began before their wedding, Nwosu's elder sister persuaded her to go through with the marriage, assuring her that things would get better. However, the abuse only escalated, with one incident leaving her bleeding after he dragged her by the hair.

During an interview with Ayo Adesanya, Nwosu, the actress stated the abuse started before the the wedding and she had made up her mind to call off the marriage but was persuaded by her elder sister to proceed with the marriage.

“I went to the kitchen to boil water and he suddenly broke down the door,” she said. “He pulled me by my hair so hard that I started bleeding. I don’t even know where I got the strength from that day. I picked up a pestle, ready to fight back. My neighbours saw me naked.”

Nwosu emphasized that she doesn't believe that marriage should be a life-or-death matter.

“I don’t believe marriage should be a do-or-die affair. Once a man beats you, be ready to keep taking it. It won’t stop,” she warned.

She encouraged women to walk off if they feel in a relationship marked by violence.

“If you see violence before the wedding, it won’t stop after,” she said. “Don’t wait for him to change. Walk away before it becomes too late.”
