"My Father Fela Would Still Be Alive If His Wives Hadn’t Slept With Other Men and Infected Him With AIDS" - Seun Kuti Reveals

Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, recently claimed during an Instagram livestream that his father Fela would still be alive if his wives hadn’t slept with other men and infected him with AIDS.

He was responding to online criticism accusing Fela of infecting his partners with HIV and dying from AIDS. 

Seun argued that Fela lived by his own non-traditional rules, allowing his wives freedom to see other men, and that this openness led to the virus entering the home.

“Fela did not keep his women to himself. He believed that as he was free to sleep with all his women, his women should also be free to meet other men just don’t bring them to my house. That was my father’s law. And he doesn’t leave his house in search of women; he was always with his women inside. They would be the ones to go out and bring it in.”

“My father doesn’t leave his house to sleep with other women outside, so it was his women who brought HIV home to him. Nobody is perfect. Everybody make mistakes. But Fela is a man that is on the side of humanity.”

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti died on August 2, 1997, at age 58 from complications related to AIDS. His family, including brother Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, a doctor, publicly confirmed the cause shortly after.
