"Ridiculous and Disrespectful" - 2Baba Shuts Down Fela vs. Wizkid Comparisons

Veteran Nigerian singer 2Baba recently shared his thoughts on comparing Fela Anikulapo-Kuti to Wizkid, calling it "ridiculous and disrespectful" to Fela while also being unfair to Wizkid.

This statement comes from an interview on the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, where the veteran Nigerian artist emphasized the vast differences in their eras, styles, and impacts on music.

Fela is widely regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, a revolutionary figure who used his music as a tool for political activism, anti-corruption messages, and challenging oppressive governments in Nigeria and beyond. While Wizkid, is a modern global superstar who has helped elevate Afrobeats to mainstream international success through melodic, commercial hits, collaborations, and massive streaming numbers. He's a product of a different generation, focused on pop accessibility, worldwide appeal, and industry dominance in the streaming era.

2Baba's point is that putting them head-to-head ignores these contextual differences and it's not about who is "better," but that they operate in completely separate lanes.

Fela's contributions are foundational and irreplaceable in terms of cultural and political significance, while Wizkid's are groundbreaking in terms of global reach and commercial achievement.

2Baba emphasized that comparing them directly disrespects Fela's unique historical role and puts unnecessary pressure on Wizkid to match an entirely different kind of legacy.

This sparked discussions across social media and news outlets today (February 6, 2026), with many agreeing that both artists deserve respect on their own terms rather than forced rivalries.
