CAN Declares 'Black Sunday' Over Insecurity

In a move that has sent ripples across the nation's faith communities, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has officially declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as "Black Sunday",  transforming what is typically a day of "Blessed Sunday" celebrations, worship, and joy into a nationwide period of mourning and solemn reflection. 

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, announced the declaration as part of a three-day national prayer and mourning programme that kicked off on June 12 (Democracy Day). Christians across the country have been urged to attend services dressed in black to honour the countless victims of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks that continue to plague states including Oyo, Borno, Zamfara, and other regions. 

Churches nationwide are replacing vibrant praise sessions with prayers for the souls of slain men, women, children, farmers, students, and clergy. The association described the ongoing violence as a "national tragedy" that has shattered families and communities.

"This Sunday, we are not only mourning, we are speaking with one voice," Archbishop Okoh stated. CAN is also using the platform to demand stronger government action, including a federal state of emergency on security, the establishment of state police, and decentralized security architecture.
