Falz Speaks On Quitting Law To Focus On Music

Nigerian rapper, actor, and activist Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has opened up on why he walked away from a career in law to chase music full-time.

Speaking during a recent interview, the award-winning artist revealed that while he was called to the bar and practiced as a lawyer for a bit, his passion for music was too strong to ignore.

"I studied law, I was called to bar, and I even practiced briefly. But music was always the thing", Falz said. "At some point I had to make a choice. It was either keep playing safe with law or go all in for what I really loved, which was music and entertainment."

The 35-year-old entertainer, who is also the son of human rights lawyer Femi Falana SAN, said the decision wasn’t easy because of expectations from family and society. But he noted that following his purpose has paid off.

Since quitting legal practice, Falz has built one of the most respected careers in Nigerian pop culture. From hit songs like This Is Nigeria, Bop Daddy, and Soft Work to acting roles in The Men's Club, Chief Daddy, and Brotherhood, he has become known for blending comedy, social commentary, and music.

Falz added that his legal background still helps him today, especially when speaking on governance, police brutality, and youth issues.  

"Law gave me structure and the ability to analyze issues. I may not be in court, but I use it every day in how I address things", he said.
