Legendary music icon Majek Fashek dies at 57

Majekodunmi Fasheke popularly known as Majek Fashek, a Nigerian reggae icon dies at 57 after battling cancer for almost a year. He died on June 1, 2020. This was confirmed by his longtime manager, Umenka Uzoma Day.

"Today been having press calls, well it is true that the African No1 legendary icon has gone to be with the LORD his maker," he said.

"Let's celebrate him, his achievements, and his family, whatever decision made by his immediate family will be notified"

The Rainmaker was best known for his 1988 album Prisoner of Conscience which included the multiple award winning single, Send Down The Rain.

In the early 80s, Fashek who used a stage name, Rajesh Jamal joined two other artists to form a group called Jastix.

Shortly after Jastix disbanded, Fashek  went solo to release Prisoner of Conscience, with Send Down The Rain, which because Nigerian number one reggae hit song.

In 2015, it was revealed that Fashek was bankrupt and battle drug addiction. When Fashek admitted his addiction to drugs, he was admitted into drug rehabilitation center in Abuja. He also had other health challenges and was hospitalized on several occasions.

The music icon has worked with many artists like Beyonce, Tracy Chapman, Michael Jackson and Snoop Dogg. His music was influenced by Bob Marley.
