Court orders the immediate release of Sowore


Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, who is also a publisher of Sahara Reporters, from the custody of the Department of State Service.

The judge said Sowore should be released to his lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), who is to produce him for arraignment whenever he is required.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo said the activist must deposit his passport within 48 hours and other travel documents to guarantee his availability for trail, since charges has already been filed against him
The judge had earlier stood down the case after hearing arguments from legal teams of Sowore and the DSS.

Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), noted that the order issued by the court on August 8, 2019 permitting the DSS to hold the activist for 45 days, had expired on September 21.
The judge, Taiwo Taiwo, said the law provides for the freedom of all Nigerians regardless of economic or political status.

"The liberty of all Nigerians high or low, poor or rich is guaranteed by the constitution. It's for this end that I'm of the view that the defendant ought to be released forthwith, " Mr. Taiwo said in a short ruling on Tuesday.

Mr. Sowore was arrested on August 3 for planning a nationwide protest, under the themes, #RevolutionNow.

Mr. Sowore has been a long time activist, right from his days at the university, University of Lagos.
